The editing space is over-saturated.
With bad editors.
I'm not necessarily talking about editors who don't know how to edit (which is a separate problem for another time).
There are tons of editors who are bad at:
Branding
Communication
Meeting deadlines
Receiving feedback
Understanding client's vision
The bar is very low nowadays and has been for some time.
If you have thought about starting video editing OR you did start but you are unsure about what steps to take next, this email is for you.
Are you ready?
Why Most Editors Fail
When I first started, I believed editing was just a skill. And since skills can be learned by anyone, I thought my skill wasn't unique enough.
This led me to believe I had to compete on price with others who did the same thing as me.
I charged low (not as low as some editors do but pretty low). I wasn't too efficient at this time so it took me 3-5 days to edit a video. So I worked long hours just to make SOME money.
But over time, I realized that clients don't focus on the hours or effort I put into editing. Instead, they care about the impact and results they achieve from the video once it's released.
I realized that I can charge whatever I want, as long as I deliver results.
How To Make It As A Video Editor
I get tons of DMs daily asking me "how to land clients".
I always say the same: "Get good and give free value".
It's simple, not easy.
So now you're asking "how do I get good?".
First of all, stop binging tutorials.
You have to start a project. You will learn much more if you expose a knowledge gap in yourself and then try to eliminate it.
The project can be anything. Download a VOD from your favorite streamer, re-edit an already existing YouTube video, or pick up a camera and record something yourself. Just start working on something.
When you reach a point where you don't know how to do something, search up a tutorial and get back to working.
Repeat until you finish the project.
"Now what?"
You start another one. And you never stop working on projects.
That's how you get good.
But how do you make money with it?
How To Land Clients
Imagine this:
You're a busy creator or business owner. Every day people DM you and want something from you. They either want your attention or money.
What do you do?
You stop reading most of your DMs.
We, as editors, have to break through this. And we do it by offering free value.
Free value can be a lot of things:
Scripts
Thumbnails
A list of ideas
A strategy document
But since most of us are just editing at the start, we send a free 30-second sample.
To land a client:
Find someone's YouTube channel
Re-edit their video (a 30-second sample)
Send it to them with "I re-edited your video. Thoughts?"
Repeat
You should repeat the process until you land your first client and even after that.
This is the best way I found to land clients as a beginner and it can get you to a fulltime status in a matter of weeks.
There are more ways to do this but they are usually applicable a little bit later when you build up your brand.
If you feel like this is a lotta work. It is.
